Neoclassical Drift of Circulating Orbits Due to Toroidal Electric Field in Tokamaks

چکیده
In tokamaks, Ware pinch is a well known neoclassical effect for trapped particles in response to a toroidal electric field. It is generally believed that there exists no similar neoclassical effect for circulating particles without collisions. However, this belief is erroneous, and misses an important effect. We show both analytically and numerically that under the influence of a toroidal electric field parallel to the current, the circulating orbits drift outward toward the outer wall with a characteristic velocity O ( ε−1 ) larger than the E×B velocity, where ε is the inverse aspect-ratio of a tokamak. During a RF overdrive, the toroidal electric field is anti-parallel to the current. As a consequence, all charged particles, including backward runaway electrons, will drift inward towards the inner wall.

Neoclassical radial electric field and transport with finite orbits.
Neoclassical transport in a toroidal plasma with finite ion orbits is studied, including for the first time the self-consistent radial electric field. Using a low-noise deltaf particle simulation, we demonstrate that a deep electric-field well develops in a region with a steep density gradient, because of the self-collision-driven ion flux. We find that the electric field agrees with the standa...
متن کاملTheory for Neoclassical Toroidal Plasma Viscosity in Tokamaks
Abstract. Error fields and resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modes are ubiquitous in real tokamaks. They break the toroidal symmetry in |B| in tokamaks. Here, B is the magnetic field. The broken toroidal symmetry leads to enhanced neoclassical toroidal plasma viscosity and consequently the rate of the toroidal flow damping. The neoclassical toroidal plasma viscosity also results in a steady s...

Traditional electrostatic gyrokinetic treatments consist of a gyrokinetic Fokker-Planck equation and a gyrokinetic quasineutrality equation. Both of these equations can be found up to second order in a gyroradius over macroscopic length expansion in some simplified cases, but the versions implemented in codes are typically only first order. In axisymmetric configurations such as the tokamak, th...
متن کاملNeoclassical toroidal plasma viscosity torque in collisionless regimes in tokamaks.
Bumpiness in a magnetic field enhances the magnitude of the plasma viscosity and increases the rate of the plasma flow damping. A general solution of the neoclassical toroidal plasma viscosity (NTV) torque induced by nonaxisymmetric magnetic perturbation (NAMP) in the collisionless regimes in tokamaks is obtained in this Letter. The plasma angular momentum can be strongly changed, when there is...
متن کاملFinite-Orbit-Width Effect and the Radial Electric Field in Neoclassical Transport Phenomena
Modeling and detailed simulation of neoclassical transport phenomena both in 2D and 3D toroidal configurations are shown. The emphasis is put on the effect of finiteness of the drift-orbit width, which brings a non-local nature to neoclassical transport phenomena. Evolution of the self-consistent radial electric field in the framework of neoclassical transport is also investigated. The combinat...
